ITEM: Membership

  • Derek Moneypenny was officially voted in as new CFL Secretary, serving until 2006, and as CFL Chair at that time.
  • Michele Butler, outgoing CFL Chair, was recognized for her accomplishments.
  • The Northwest Area Foundation was accepted as a new CFL member.

ITEM: Council on Foundations Conference

  • Hinda Greenberg led a discussion regarding various Council On Foundations affinity groups who have contacted CFL.
  • These groups are interested in doing joint programming and perhaps having a separate conference of their own.
  • No decision was made with regard to a future involvement on the part of CFL with these proposed activities; the topic will be taken up again at a later date.

ITEM: CFL's Status

  • The next order of business was a discussion regarding CFL's status as an organization.
  • Should CFL become an independent 501(c)3 charity?
  • To do this, CFL would have to incorporate.

ITEM: Activity of CFL

  • Hinda Greenberg asked the question, "How active/diverse does CFL want to be?"
  • She made the point that this step would require CFL to define a specific direction as an organization.
  • She requested input from everyone.
  • This topic will be taken up by the newly formed Past Chair's Council.

ITEM: Low CFL Attendance

  • We then took up the topic of low attendance at meetings.
  • Lisa Abbott, among others, stated that travel cost is prohibitive.
  • The fact that virtual attendance is an option was cited as very important.

There was consensus agreement on the following with regard to this issue:

  • Post times and dates of meetings as far in advance as possible, to help with budget planning -Have meetings coincide with major library-specific conferences (i.e. SLA)
  • The next CFL meeting, in New York this coming November, does not coincide with any other conference.
  • Hinda Greenberg stated that from now on, every effort would be made to have CFL meetings coincide with major library-specific conferences such as SLA and Internet Librarian.
  • She also agreed to present this topic on the CFL listserv for further discussion.

Conclusion

  • After lunch, attendees discussed activities within their organizations, after which the meeting was adjourned.
  • Attendees were then treated to a
  • very informative and impressive tour of the Nashville Public Library.
  • We were particularly impressed with the children's area and huge puppet theater.

Respectfully submitted,
Derek Moneypenny
